Cunk on Earth proves Americans Need more British Teachers

Cunk on Earth played by the lovely and talented Diane Morgan and created by Charlie Brooker is a hilarious sendup of the historical documentary. Everybody will tell you it’s good, it’s funny, it’s worth your time, but keep in mind it’s not factual, but nonetheless it is entertaining. I will say after watching it, I found the jokes a little easier to remember and recite when trying to advertise to people why they should watch it. So, I tried to narrow down why that is that I am able to recall episodes, and facts. Was it that she was funny, perhaps, was it her format of comedy and short 24-minute episodes, maybe, but after careful consideration it was the accent.

Scholars have always said “if you want to learn best, learn from an Englishman.” I believe that only goes as far as subjects of history and lectures but not involving colonialism of course. And as I digested the show’s easily digestible format, it rang true, as I watched Cunk travel to the various parts of Italy discussing the Roman empire and Pompeii. So, I had to do some additional research on why is it that British accents resonate better with Americans. There are a few reasons why some Americans may find it easier to learn from a British accent:

  1. Familiarity: Many Americans have been exposed to British accents through popular media such as television shows, movies, and music. As a result, they may be more familiar with the sounds and intonations of the accent, making it easier for them to understand.
  2. Clear pronunciation: British accents are often associated with clear and precise pronunciation. This can make it easier for Americans to understand words and phrases, especially if the speaker is enunciating carefully.
  3. Slower pace: British accents tend to be spoken at a slower pace than some American accents. This can be helpful for learners who are still developing their listening and comprehension skills.
  4. Neutral accent: Some British accents, such as Received Pronunciation (RP), are considered to be more neutral than certain American accents. This means that they may be easier for non-native speakers to understand, as they do not contain as many regional or cultural influences.

However, it’s important to note that every individual has their own unique learning preferences and experiences, so what works for one person may not work for another. Ultimately, the best way to learn a language or improve your listening skills is through consistent practice and exposure to a variety of accents and dialects.

Give Cunk on Earth a chance so Netflix throws money at it and I can continue my quest for learning historical jocularity as opposed to learning about history. Besides I already knew most of the stuff she is talking about anyway, I just like reinforcing it with humor, which will make me retain it even further. Go Cunk!
