ARMY OF, EVIL’ING THE DEAD AND DEAD BEFORE DAWN: SAM RAIMI’S FRANCHISE LIVES ON

With the release of Evil Dead: Rise this April, we can expect Lee Cronin at directors’ helm and writer alongside Sam Raimi will deliver the usual that comes from the Evil Dead franchise. But before we get to the re-birth of slick, we need to remember how we go here.

The Evil Dead franchise is a series of horror films that began with the 1981 cult classic “The Evil Dead”. Directed by Sam Raimi, the film tells the story of five friends who travel to a remote cabin in the woods, only to awaken an ancient evil that possesses and terrorizes them. The film’s mix of intense gore, dark humor, and innovative camera work helped establish it as a landmark of the horror genre, and its success spawned two sequels, a reboot, and a television series.

The original “Evil Dead” film was made on a shoestring budget, with Raimi and his friends serving as cast and crew. Despite its low production values, the film’s creative visuals and shocking violence made it a hit with horror fans, and it has since become a cult classic. The film’s sequels, “Evil Dead II” and “Army of Darkness”, continued the story of protagonist Ash Williams (played by Bruce Campbell) as he fought against the supernatural forces that plagued him.

“Evil Dead II” is often considered the best of the series, as it combines the humor and horror of the first film with more polished special effects and a more focused narrative. The film also features some of Campbell’s most iconic moments as Ash, such as his battle with his own possessed hand and his transformation into a chainsaw-wielding hero.

“Army of Darkness” takes the series in a new direction, as Ash is transported back in time to medieval England and must fight an army of the undead. The film’s humor is more pronounced than in previous entries, and it features some of the most quotable lines in the franchise, such as “This is my boomstick!” and “Hail to the king, baby!”.

In 2013, a reboot of the franchise was released, simply titled “Evil Dead”. Directed by Fede Alvarez and produced by Raimi and Campbell, the film took a more serious and visceral approach to the story, with less of the humor that had characterized the earlier films. While some fans were skeptical of the reboot, it was generally well-received by critics and grossed over $100 million worldwide.

Most recently, the franchise was revived for the small screen with the 2015 series “Ash vs. Evil Dead”. Set decades after the events of the original films, the series follows an older and more cynical Ash as he battles against the latest threat from the underworld. The series was praised for its mix of horror and comedy, as well as Campbell’s return to the role that made him famous.

While the Evil Dead franchise has had its ups and downs over the years, it remains a beloved and influential part of the horror genre. Its mix of gore, humor, and inventive visuals has inspired countless filmmakers and has helped shape the way we think about horror today. With new entries in the franchise still being considered, it’s clear that the Evil Dead will continue to haunt and delight audiences for years to come.

At Thinknewsnow, we can’t wait, we shamelessly and willingly throw our money to anything with the name Evil Dead on it. Raimi has achieved what he didn’t expect when a group of young adults went into the woods to film a low budget horror project so many years ago.
