How to Internet: Create an ’80’s themed Social Media Account

Written by:

We’ve all doom scrolled down our feeds and come across them, the Nostalgia Postings. They play on our heart strings, they get us to think of the better days of some bygone era that we were a part of, and when we were younger, which is always rosier through the glasses of a modern warfare filled world as we age. They are catchy, addictive, and they are pretty boiler plate in their design and method. So rather than comment on the uselessness of these, why not play it up and just help each other out.

Personal favorite doom scroll is Nintendo obviously!

What do I mean by help each other out? Well, you’re looking for more followers, aren’t you? Aren’t we all seeking the growth of our own online presence to create more eyes and get the views we desire? No? Okay I’ll entertain you with this article, nonetheless, so please continue reading. But, for the others who want to grow an account, why not use the time-honored tradition of Nostalgia Posting to drive content and user engagement. From retro content creation to community engagement, here’s how to take a digital journey back in time.

THE 80’S WERE ABOUT STYLES AND LOOKS AND SO SHOULD YOUR POSTS
To immerse yourself and your audience in the 1980s nostalgia, it’s essential to create content that resonates with the era:

a. Design your posts in the style of….colorful images, flashy Popping GIFs, and videos that capture the essence of the ’80s. Use hashtags like #80sNostalgia or #FlashbackFriday to categorize your posts.

b. Fonts, look for those ’80’s fonts. Also look to create a posting with movement and text prompts that causes the user to stay engaged longer in your post.

c. Music is important. All posts should come with an iconic theme that immediately transports the viewer. The overused Tears for Fears song “Everybody wants to rule the world” has been played out, so I want us to move on, but damn it’s such a great song! Additionally Create Playlists: Create Spotify or YouTube playlists featuring hit songs from the ’80s. Share these with your followers for an auditory trip back in time.

WHAT TO FEATURE (COME ON REALLY, YOU KNOW THIS)
The 1980s were filled with iconic movies, TV shows, and video games that continue to bring joy to people. Incorporate these elements into your social media strategy.

a. Products such as Ecto-Cooler or toys from the era of unlimited plastic also hit big with an audience.

b. Retro Television commercial spots like “Where’s the Beef” and “Time to make the Donuts” can also score big views.

c. Find Obscure related content, as many people have tried and flooded the nostalgia postings with all of the above, maybe there is something else you could provide that no one has thought of yet or done it well enough.

d. Relying on movies, videos or television shows is a tried-and-true method that will probably garner you some views and build a small following.

e. Fashion and Passion: Share fashion tips and inspiration from the 1980s. Look at all the loud colors, teach someone how to tease their hair up or give tutorials on how to create an iconic 80’s look.

EVENTING YOUR CONTENT
Create events around your content and see if the community joins you in these events. I have been to live streams where the music and content kept the users engaged, but additionally consider other ways to event your site/account.

a. Movie Nights: Host online watch parties featuring classic ’80s films like “E.T.,” “The Breakfast Club,” or “Ghostbusters.” Use platforms like Netflix Party or Discord to watch together (Shoot I’m already guilty of using Ghostbusters one too many times on this very blog.)

b. TV Show Discussions: Start discussions or polls about popular ’80s TV shows such as “The A-Team,” “The Golden Girls,” or “Knight Rider.”

c. Retro Gaming: Share gameplay videos or host live streams of vintage video games like Pac-Man, Super Mario, or Tetris. (Umm I’ve already done that too.)

BUILDING YOUR COMMUNITY
Building a sense of community is crucial for spreading ’80s nostalgia and happiness:

a. Interactive Quizzes: Create trivia quizzes about ’80s music, movies, or pop culture and encourage your followers to participate.

b. Share Memories: Encourage your audience to share their own ’80s memories, stories, and personal memorabilia. Comment sections of the Nostalgia Postings take on a life of their own if you stoke the fire a little and engage with the commenters.

c. Weekly Challenges: Launch weekly challenges like “Show us your best ’80s dance moves” or “Share your favorite ’80s family photos.” Sometimes harder to get your users to do this as a beginner, so maybe you will need to compensate or build your own version to start the ball rolling.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCES AND SHARING
Authenticity goes a long way in making your ’80s nostalgia journey relatable and endearing:

a. Personal Stories: Share your own ’80s memories, experiences, and what made that era special to you. Your own authenticity can come through in what you post as content.

b. Family and Friends: Encourage your followers to share their family’s ’80s photos and stories. These personal anecdotes can be heartwarming and relatable. Make yourself sticky with the moms and dads and uncles and aunts who also wax poetically about the 1980’s.

c. Behind-the-Scenes: Give a behind-the-scenes look at how you curate and create your ’80s content. Share your process, the challenges, and the fun you have along the way. A video posting on how you create your videos sometimes can get as many views as your display postings.

HASHTAG ME ####
One of the biggest and most important ways to grow your own account is to follow and promote others. Like some sort of top-down scheme, in the geometric shape of perhaps a pyramid, your account can be useful by just being a fan of other accounts. To expand your reach and connect with others who share your passion for the ’80s, use relevant hashtags and engage with influencers:

a. Follow and Tag Influencers: Follow ’80s enthusiasts and influencers on social media. Tag them in your posts, and you may get a shoutout or a share.

b. Leverage Trending Hashtags: Keep an eye on trending hashtags and find ways to incorporate your ’80s content into those trends.

c. Create Unique Hashtags: Develop your unique ’80s-themed hashtags that others can use to join your movement.

YOU’RE ON YOUR WAY TO NOSTALGIC SUCCESS
Using social media as a tool for sharing 1980s nostalgia and happiness is not only enjoyable but also an excellent way to connect with like-minded individuals who share your love for that era. Through creative content, interactive engagement, and community-building, you can take your followers on a delightful journey back in time (Huey Lewis and the News song comes to mind here.) So, embrace the neon colors, the iconic music, and the memorable pop culture of the 1980s, and watch as your social media becomes a lighthouse of cool and nostalgia in a sea of depression and reality of our modern era.
